In most cases, it may seem obvious that two siblings are identical twins by looking at them; but in cases where they have slight differences in physical appearance, it may be necessary for a Twins DNA Test.
Identical TwinsIdentical, or monozygotic, twins will have an exact DNA profile. When the sperm met the egg, the zygote (baby to be) split and formed two embryos. Because the DNA contributed by the parents came from the same sperm and egg, the two children inherit the same DNA.
Fraternal TwinsFraternal, or dizygotic, twins will not have an exact DNA profile. When the mother released two or more eggs, they were fertilized by separate sperm; fraternal twins are related in the same way as siblings.
Probability of Identical TwinsIdentical DNA shared between two siblings that are not identical twins is highly unlikely. Due to the extremely low probability, it can be concluded that an exact match confirms the identical twin relationship.
In the event that the mother is unsure whether the two children are from the same father (which can happen, even if they were born together), we can perform a Sibling DNA Test in conjunction with the Twin DNA Test at no extra charge.
