Our family histories

think again. Many of us have a hard time thinking much past the
great grandparent level and we have more cousins than we can

10 Generations
Your DNA came from
mom and dad, their DNA came from grandma and grandpa, and so on. In
two generations you are directly related to 4 people whose DNA you
share. Now think 10 generations back. It's not easy to do but to put
it in to perspective, if an average generation is 20 years then we
would be talking about the early 1800's. You are directly related to
1024 great grandparents who may not have known each other. This is a
simplification but the fact remains that our family histories are
growing more complicated by the minute.
Surnames
Surname studies are
made possible by the fact that many cultures have passed the surname
down along the male line with little or no change. The same is true
for the Y-chromosome and confirming one with the other can be
powerful.
